The Altmar-Parish-Williamstown Central School District continued the tradition of honoring varsity team captains and refining each captain’s leadership skills at seasonal brunches. The brunch concept was introduced last year by APW Athletic Director Bert Conklin as a way for team captains to collectively examine, develop and strengthen their leadership skills both on and off the sports field.
Team captains from the football, soccer, cheerleading and cross country fall sports teams were represented at the recent brunch and participated in a self-assessment exercise where they were asked to reflect upon their individual strengths and weaknesses as well as define their roles and responsibilities. Conklin stressed the importance of individual leadership attributes and said that each captain brings a different strength to team.
The leadership exercise also focused on the importance of leading by example, leaving a legacy for future team captains, enforcing standards of exceptional moral character, and also sustaining team morale. In addition, a motivational leadership DVD encouraged the captains to be a leader that is part of a solution not part of a problem.
Following a breakfast prepared by the APW Food Service Department, Conklin presented each student with a leadership certificate as acknowledgment of their participating in the brunch and their commitment to their team and their school as a team captain and a leader.
