Altmar-Parish-Williamstown Junior/Senior High School science teacher Catherine Goulet, in cooperation with the Oswego County BOCES Distance Learning Program, gave students in the school’s Forensic Science class an opportunity to observe an autopsy.
Pathologists from the Wexner Medical Center at the Ohio State University performed the autopsy via video conference through Center of Science and Industry.
APW students were given an opportunity to ask the medical experts questions and recorded their findings during the procedure.
This included recording external examination findings and recording findings relative to the cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, urinary, endocrine, and central nervous system.
Watching the autopsy was just one part of the classroom project.
Goulet received a CD containing toxicology results of tissue and organ cultures taken during the autopsy procedure.
The students reviewed the results, were asked to determine a cause of death for the victim and then prepare a report of their findings that support their determination.
