PARISH – The Altmar-Parish-Williamstown Central School District technology class is gearing up to compete at the Northern New York Robotics Academy competition.

Starting last year, NNYRA is a growing education initiative whose goal is to support the engineering and technology workforce needs of the future. APW technology teacher George Parker says that his students learned a lot from last years’ competition, and they have a lot of new ideas to improve their performance further this year.
The competition will be held this spring at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
The APW team has been connecting regularly with students of Northwood School in Lake Placid as well as robotics builders from Clarkson University via video conferences to discuss the design and build of this year’s robot. These videoconference sessions provoke discussions regarding size dimensions, laws of physics and electronics, all while keeping the parameters of the task in mind.
Clarkson University representative Benjamin Baumgardner sat in on a session to offer suggestions to the build of the robot.
One idea was modular setup that would allow for the easy transition of parts during the competition. The students will use computer-aided design software to create and test their robotic prototypes.
