PARISH – The Altmar-Parish-Williamstown Central School District recently held its district-wide Battle of the Books competition.

Battle of the Books is a reading an initiative that challenges students’ reading comprehension skills during a series of competitions, which start at the school level and then continue on to the district and county levels. At each level of the competition, student teams are quizzed on the content reading of 10 different books.
The APWCSD competition was divided into third and fourth grade, fifth and sixth grade and ninth through 12th grade sections.

The teams had 30 seconds to answer a series of 16 questions. 5 points were awarded to teams with the correct book title and eight points were awarded to teams with the correct title and author; no points were given for answering only the correct author.
The third and fourth grade competition was full of challenges.
Each team had three opportunities to challenge a call by the judges.
They were allowed two minutes’ time to search through a book to support their answer.
Only one challenge by the Blue Medals Team (Peyton Flanagan, Annaleah Wejko and Gail Louer) succeeded.

Some of the books read this year were: “The World According to Humphrey” by Betty G. Birney, “The Vanishing Coin” by Kate Egan, “The Anybodies” by N. E. Bode and “Out of My Mind” by Sharon M. Draper.
The third and fourth grade winners were: first place, The Final 3 Returns (Will Alsworth, Jason Bobanick and Jakob Amidon), second place, Team Lightning (Boe Flanagan, Will Francisco and Jack Rattray) and third place, the Blue Medals (Peyton Flanagan, Annaleah Wejko and Gail Louer).
