It was a battle of the pages and for the ages.
A recent Altmar-Parish-Williamstown Central School District (APW) district-wide Battle of the Books competition put students’ literary knowledge to the test for an opportunity to represent APW at an upcoming county-wide books battle.
Battle of the Books is a nationally recognized literacy program coordinated in Oswego County through the Oswego County BOCES School Library System and at APW through district coordinator and high school librarian Adam Wall.
The program encourages students to read, enhances reading comprehension and promotes teamwork as well as academic excellence.
Students from each APW elementary school along with students from the middle school and high school volunteered to participate in this program by committing to read 12 to 15 books from a predetermined list.
The students, working in teams of two to three members along with a coach, discussed the books and quizzed each other on the contents in preparation for the district-wide competition.
The district-level competition brought together the top four teams from both Altmar Elementary School and Parish Elementary School for a level three/four competition, the top seven teams from the middle school for a level five/six competition, and the top two teams from the high school for a nine through twelve competition.
During each level of competition teams were asked 16 questions about the books on their book list and were given 30 seconds to provide an answer.
Points were awarded for each correct title and author provided.
Winning first place in the three/four competition was team A.K.A Rebel Warriors, comprised of Altmar Elementary School students Abigail Babcock, Katelin Castor, and Anna Mullin.
Capturing second place was the team of Amber Amidon, Ainsley Brouse, and Haylee Henry from Parish Elementary School.
In third place was the team of Emily Sampson, Emily Weaver, and Jocelyn Zender from Altmar Elementary School.
The Three Musketeers took first place in the district-level five/six competition.
The team consists of APW Middle School students Mikenzie Barankovich, Mecedyz Wood, and Peyton Nadeau.
Second place at this level was the team of Anthony Frank, Jillian Mueller, and Jake Trudell.
In third place was the team of Marisa Barber, Riley Houde, and Kerri Muckey.
Capturing first place in the level nine through twelve competition was the two-person team of Maggie Allardice and Kensey Kerr.
The literary champs from each level along with a two-person level seven/eight team from the APW Middle School will represent the APW School District at the upcoming Oswego County Battle of the Books competition on April 25 at the Hannibal High School.
The competition will begin at 6 p.m. and is open to the public.
