APW ‘Story Time with Teachers’ Returns for the Second Year

The APW Faculty Association is joining with the APW Parent-Teacher-Student Association and the Williamstown and Parish public libraries to host ‘Story Time with Teachers.’

September 26 was the kickoff of the APW Faculty Association’s ‘Story Time with Teachers’ program. School Counselor Andrea Swan read the book ‘Johnny Appleseed and the Bears’ to the children in attendance. The 2013-14 school year marks the second year of the educational outreach program coordinated by the APW Faculty Association in conjunction with the Parish and the Williamstown public libraries. The APW Parent-Teacher-Student Association joined this year’s program, providing free books to giveaway at each ‘Story Time’ event.

The 2013-14 school year marks the second year of the educational outreach program where teachers from the school district host a monthly story, craft, and snack hour at the public library in the Parish and the Williamstown communities.

This year’s kick-off event took place in late September at the Parish Public Library. School Counselor Andrea Swan and Fifth Grade Teacher Stephanie Huebner hosted the September ‘Story Time’ which had an apple theme.

Children in attendance enjoyed the book Johnny Appleseed and the Bears by David Novak, made an apple tree craft and taste-tested several different apple varieties.

As a special highlight the APW Parent-Teacher-Student-Association donated books to the APW Faculty Association and each child was given a free book of their choice to take home to encourage reading at home and with family.

Children in the community are invited to attend, free of charge, any of the following upcoming ‘Story Time’ events: October 24 at the Williamstown Public Library; November 21 at the Parish Public Library; December 19 at the Williamstown Public Library; January 23 at the Parish Public Library; February 20 at the Williamstown Public Library; March 27 at the Parish Public Library; April 17 at the Williamstown Public Library; May 22 at Parish Public Library; and June 12 at Williamstown Public Library.

Each ‘Story Time’ will begin at 6:30 p.m.

The APW Faculty Association is comprised of teachers, teaching assistants, speech/language teachers, along with occupational and physical therapy teachers.

“Story Time with the Teachers’ is part of the associations’ Local Action Program initiative that started three years ago in conjunction with the New York State United Teachers Union.

Hanna Weigel, an APW second grade teacher and member of the Faculty Association’s board of directors said that the members of the faculty association are looking forward to continuing their partnership with the local libraries for such an important program that “encourages children in the APW community to find a love for reading and learning.”
