FULTON, NY – “I love the Arts Center. I love being in plays and Arty Camp. I have a lot of friends here too.”
These are the happy words of 9-year-old Harper, who was a reluctant participant in Arty Camp her first summer in 2014. But after one day, she wanted to return for a second week.
Since then CNY Arts Center has become a significant part of her life.
Between Arty Camp, voice lessons at the center and the direction of the talented theatre team, she has blossomed.
Registrations are open for 2016 Arty Day Camp set to run July 11 – August 19 for six weeks of summer art and theatre fun.
This year’s camp offers a menu of choices and options for busy summer schedules and flexible participation at two locations.
Campers can choose to attend individual sessions, half or full days, a single class or full week.
Classes are planned with new topics such as video production, Arty2D2 Star Wars theme art, art inspired by nature and animals, woodworking, paper pizzazz and more.
Expanded culinary classes on Tuesdays are included for students registered for the full week. Students can also register for Culinary class alone but pre-registration is required.
Aerospace artist and Fulton native Don Gillespie returns for another week of instruction in his special painting techniques. Students will have a full week of painting with the master artist.
Theatre camp will run in two three-week sessions and produce a complete play in each session.
Under the direction of Jessica Tetro and Adam Schmidtmann, students will design and make their own costumes, create sets, learn lines and prepare each play for a showcase free to the public at the close of each session.
I Wish, the Cinderella story told from the sassy Fairy Godmother’s perspective, will be presented in the first session, July 11-29.
Jungle Book is the theme of the second session with all the popular characters of the well-known book brought to life during camp Aug 1- 19.
A scholarship fund was established last year by Gillespie after spending six weeks with the students and seeing the wonderful experience of an arts filled summer.
The arts center has been raising funds and applying for grants to supplement additional scholarships.
CNY Arts Center has a goal of subsidizing at least partial scholarships for one in four children who need assistance to attend camp.
In addition to scholarships, there are creative ways to cover the cost of tuition and parents are strongly encouraged to inquire if the cost of camp is prohibitive.
Parents can become volunteers in exchange for camp tuition assistance and siblings are prorated at a discount.
At the request of working parents this year, Arty Camp will offer early drop off and late pickup for an extra fee. Free lunch and a free art project will again be offered each day from noon to 2 p.m. open to any child in the county.
Last year, Harper had her first speaking role in Arty Camp’s Peggy the Pint-Sized Pirate and went on to have a lead in the recent production of Seussical, Jr as Gertrude McFuzz. Harper’s parents think “CNY Arts Center is truly a jewel in our community.”
