After witnessing a resolution pass in the Democratic-controlled Assembly today concerning how Arizona should manage its affairs, Assemblyman Will Barclay (R,C,I—Pulaski) urged his colleagues to look again at their job descriptions and the laws governing the State Legislature.
“If it wasn’t clear before, it is clear today that the Assembly Democratic Majority is out of touch with its constituency and instead of focusing on our own state’s fiscal crisis, one of the first orders of business on the calendar today directs another state on how to manage its affairs,†said Barclay.
“Our budget is two months late and we have a budget shortfall of over $9 billion. Joint conference committee meetings have not been empanelled and Majority in-party fighting has, so far, governed our state. No budget process is in place, even now. There is serious work to do. And people will not tolerate new taxes and fees. We must figure out ways to trim state spending, make our school aid formula more equitable, consolidate agencies and crack down on Medicaid fraud and abuse.â€
“Regardless of how you feel about Arizona’s law concerning illegal immigrants, today’s act is an embarrassment to our state. It is a testament to how far our Majority will go to put off responsibility. Apparently, the Majority feels they are doing such a good job for New York state that they can now opine on other state’s laws. Our leaders should know better, instead, they’ve decided to ignore the crisis in our midst, have enabled our governor to pay debts with half-contrived emergency spending bills week after week, and have put our state parks, our schools, our roads, all state-run agencies and residents at risk. It’s time to arrive at solutions and pass a balanced budget for everyone’s sake already. Everyone has more important things to do than to wait for Albany to do the job it was supposed to do two months ago.â€
