OSWEGO — SUNY Oswego’s On Screen/In Person film series will present the Bengali film “Runaway” at 7 p.m. Oct. 9, at Oswego Cinema 7, 138 W. Second St.
A question-and-answer session will follow with Bengali-American director Amit Ashraf.
The crowded city of Dhaka is a hiding place for men who want to disappear, who say they want something better — perhaps a better wife, perhaps a better life.
The noirish thriller tells the story of Babu, who has made it his mission in life to return these husbands and fathers to their rural families. He gets more than he bargained for with Akbar, a politician with powerful connections.
Ashraf said he thinks of his film as being “in a weird corner — a film in Bangla (the Bengali language), set in Bangladesh but with a Hollywood finish. I ended up showing a lot of Bangladesh that isn’t shown so much, like slums, gritty streets, street nightlife, beggar children huffing.”
“Runaway” is the first feature film for Ashraf, who picked up his first camera at the age of 11, collaborating on projects with his cousins and using water guns for props.
His artistic background includes forays into animation and playwriting. His love for story and character led him to NYU’s dramatic writing program.
Tickets for “Runaway” cost $7 ($5 for seniors, $3.50 for students).
