Love for one another, kindness and compassion have always been integral parts of the school so when Hurricane Harvey recently destroyed people’s lives, homes and hope, Mexico Elementary students stepped up to lend a helping hand and open their hearts.

Students worked with a group of teachers to raise funds for relief efforts.

The entire school rallied around the effort.

During a recent school-wide assembly, students were shown photographs of the devastation Hurricane Harvey brought to the eastern Texas coast.

Third grader Madison Greenway said she was happy to help, but she “felt really bad they lost their homes.”

Every time someone donates, they write their name on a paper heart and fourth grade leaders place them on the “Good Habits Make Great Leaders” wall.

Donations continue through September.
Donations continue through September.

Contributions of any size, from a few coins to a dollar bill or more, will be collected through the end of September.

A group of fourth grade boys went above and beyond the call to help as they hosted a lemonade and cookie stand, which raised more than $400.

As of Sept. 21, the school collected more than $639 in bills alone and the spare change hadn’t even been counted.

The funds will be presented next month to a representative from the Salvation Army for its hurricane disaster relief fund.
