PALERMO – Clues and concentration during a Breakout EDU challenge in the library media center led Palermo Elementary School fourth graders to a literary prize.

The game sent students into a frenzy as they are tasked with figuring out various riddles and solutions in order to unlock the next exercise. Split into small groups, the students used the “7 Habits of Highly Effective Kids” they were taught to persevere through the struggles, all while practicing library skills.
Librarian Tiffany Carpenter said Breakout EDU perfectly aligns with the four Cs of 21st Century learning and education: collaboration, creativity, critical thinking and communication.
For the first Breakout EDU challenge, students had to either use a QR code to figure out cyberbullying information or list authors in alphabetical order to get to their next clue and locate a book using the cataloguing system before their final box was unlocked and a prize ticket good for one free book was revealed.
“I did it; I feel so smart right now,” said Ethan Simko, after his group figured out each of the clues.
Carpenter said Breakout EDU can be utilized to teach a variety of academic areas, with clues leading to more lock combinations.
The school loaned a few Breakout EDU kits from the Center for Instruction, Technology and Innovation’s School Library System.
