OSWEGO, NY – “Go for the Gold!”
Once again the Oswego High School Buccaneer Bulletin newspaper earned “All New York Gold Overall Newspaper” at the annual 2010 Empire State School Press Association Awards ceremony.
Traditionally, one of the top scholastic publications in New York State the Buccaneer Bulletin staff returned to Oswego with well over 20 awards.
Editor-in-Chief Jasmine Davis was proud of the achievements of the Buccaneer Bulletin.
She said, “The staff of the Buccaneer Bulletin has a lot to be proud of. We received more awards at ESSPA then we ever have and many of the gold awards were for the paper and its staff as a whole. After having such a successful outcome, the standards have been set high for this year.”
Superintendent of Schools Bill Crist said, “The Buccaneer Bulletin continues to set the standard for high school publications. Year after year the newspaper staff is recognized for its tremendous journalistic and artistic abilities. This is something very special for our school district and I am proud of the student newspaper staff and advisors for the quality publication they regularly produce.”
Not only did the Buccaneer Bulletin staff earn a gold classification for its newspaper, but the staff was also recognized with “gold” for design portfolio, front page design portfolio and layout and typography portfolio.
Individuals were also recipients of the highest award.
Kimberlyn Bailey received a “gold” for her editorial cartoon and her entertainment review portfolio.
Rachel Clark was the recipient of a “gold” award for her editorial “Closing Parks is Closing History.”
The staff also earned a “silver’ commendation for the picture layout in “Twins’ Family Tree” and the March 2010 editorial page.
Monek Cullen also received two silver awards for her photographer’s portfolio and a portrait photo of Chelsea Johnson. Vanessa Sheffield was given a silver award for her columnist portfolio and the feature “OHS Cribs as Unique as MTV’s.”
Emily DiFabio also received a “silver” for her columnist portfolio.
Several of the award winners have graduated.
However, Cullen said, “It was a real honor to receive an award from ESSPA. It is nice to see other people like my ‘artwork’ and perceive things the way I do. It is nice to get some kind of recognition from the ‘people at the top’ rather than people just telling me that it is a nice picture. This meant so much to me. It is not about winning. It is about being noticed.”
There were numerous bronze awards presented to the Buccaneer Bulletin.
The staff earned a bronze for the picture story-layout of “March Madness Center Spread” and for a layout and typography portfolio.
Rachel Clark was presented a bronze for her news story “School Discipline Facebook Abuses” while Bailey was recognized for her in-depth coverage of “OHS’s Best-Dressed Teachers.”
Sheffield also received a bronze for her entertainment review portfolio.
Kaitlyn Scanlon received a “bronze” for her portrait photograph of “Sarai Godwaldt.”
Bailey received an honorable mention award for her cartoon-illustration-graphic portfolio while others earning a similar award included Christina Buckingham for a columnist portfolio and Brittany Ross for her in-depth coverage of “Overbearing Parents Hurt, Not Help.”
Buckingham noted, “I feel as though the ESSPA has always been a great way of broadening my knowledge of journalist and being commended for my columns has given me more confidence in my writing in general. It is a great feeling to know that when a judge reads a story of mine, they think it to be out of the ordinary and really something noteworthy.”
The Oswego High School Buccaneer Bulletin has a tradition of being one of the finest scholastic publications in New York State.
Once again the staff has risen to the challenge to provide a quality newspaper to the students and staff.
