OSWEGO, NY – The Buccaneer Bulletin, Oswego High School’s newspaper, was named the top student newspaper in Central New York by the Syracuse Newspapers in High School Press Day ceremonies on Monday at the S.I. Newhouse School of Communications at Syracuse University.
In recognition of the OHS publication, Vicki Krisak of the Syracuse Newspapers stated, “The Buccaneer Bulletin staff does a great job, year after year.”
In addition to the top overall honor, OHS students took home nine individual awards, including three gold-level, first place plaques.
Editor-in-Chief Jasmine Davis took home a gold in editorial writing for her inquisitive piece about high school students becoming “Facebook Friends” with their teachers.
The Buccaneer Bulletin went on to sweep the editorial writing category as Faith Whitely took silver and 2010 editor Caitlin Sawyer, the bronze.
Kaitlyn Scanlon won gold for a feature story about students and teachers with hyphenated names and the concept of hyphenating names when entering into a marriage or long-term relationship.
In the same category, senior Christina Dehm took home a bronze certificate for her story about long-time OHS teacher Bill Noun who is undertaking a one-man crusade to change the phrasing of the Pledge of Allegiance to include the words “ . . . and education for all.”
Another first-place plaque went to Davis whose Athlete of the Month feature was recognized by the judges not only for its written content, but also for its layout and design.
Whitely was the lone Buc Bulletin columnist honored when her sentimental piece entitled, “It’s never too late to reconnect with your dad” garnered her the bronze.
Heather Rounds wrote an award-winning sports-related feature about OHS senior Austin Tracz, who collected hundreds of golf clubs for American soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan as a part of a volunteer service project for the National Honor Society.
A final third place recognition was granted to chief photographer Monek Cullen for her front page December photograph of an Oswego elementary student visiting Santa Claus at the city tree lighting ceremony.
The Buccaneer Bulletin is advised by R. William Reeser of the technology department and Mike McCrobie, English teacher.
They were also awarded Golden Apple awards for their contributions to scholastic journalism from the Syracuse Newspapers.
“It’s great that not just our teachers, but also newspaper professionals recognize our work in competitions like this,” stated student Tina Buckingham.
“The kids take pride in producing a quality student newspaper. This is one of the best staffs we’ve ever had. They do quality work in all aspects of newspaper production,” Reeser added.
