Canal Days Provides Phoenix Students With History Lesson

PHOENIX – For more than three decades, Phoenix fourth graders have taken their studies of the canal system from the traditional classroom and into a real-world learning experience along the river.

As part of the 32nd annual Canal Days celebration, students learned about the locks, played old-time games, practiced needlework, made candles and participated in a variety of activities.

The day offered fourth graders a glimpse into local history while having fun at the same time.

Local business owners, historians and politicians were on hand to teach the students about different tools, jobs and toys used in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

To make the experience more realistic, several presenters wore period costumes so the fourth graders could see the fashion of that era.
