Two members of the graduating class will be the featured speakers at the 2011 Commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 22, as Cayuga Community College awards more than 550 associate degrees. The ceremony will begin at 1 p.m. in Spartan Hall on Cayuga’s Auburn campus.
Both speakers—Justin Ford of Fulton and Christina Kosier of Auburn—are recipients of the 2011 Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence, the highest recognition given to students by the State University of New York. Both have been Dean’s List students and members of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Both have worked as peer tutors for Cayuga’s Academic Support Center.
Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, Ford completed an A.A.S. in computer hardware/software design in December, and is currently working on a second associate’s in liberal arts: mathematics. In addition to being an excellent scholar, Ford has also been very active on campus. He was the founding president of Phi Theta Kappa chapter on the Fulton campus, and has also been involved with the gaming, literary, drama, and tutor clubs as well as the student activities board. He was the student representative on the President’s Cabinet. He intends to pursue a bachelor’s degree in electrical/computer engineering or applied mathematics, and has been accepted into programs at Rochester Institute of Technology, SUNY Oswego, and SUNY Potsdam.
Kosier, originally from Syracuse, maintains a 3.99 grade point average and graduates with an associate’s degree in business administration. A 1991 graduate of Onondaga Central High School, she decided to pursue an education at Cayuga in 2009 after working in the banking industry. She initially became active in the campus as a peer tutor and served as president of the Tutor Club, treasurer of the Student Government Organization, orientation leader, student representative on Library Advisory Committee, graphic designer for the Academic Support Center, and a member of Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society, among others. She intends to pursue a bachelor’s degree at SUNY Albany in the fall, and then work in risk management.
The ceremony is open to the friends and family of the graduates as well as the general public. Tickets are not necessary for general seating. The 2011 commencement ceremony will be televised live on local (Auburn) Time Warner Cable Channel 12.
