Central Square Offered Grant for First Aid Training

Central Square School District was recently provided with a grant that will help obtain materials for First Aid and CPR training of seventh grade students.

The grant, offered through the New York State Retired Teachers Association of Oswego County, will be used towards the purchase of training materials for the First Aid and CPR Unit that all Central Square seventh graders students participate in during health class.

The materials purchased will include: an Automated External Defibrillator training device, four anti-choking trainers and an airway simulator.

These materials will supplement the eight CPR mannequins that were gained through a Donors Choose funded project received earlier this year.

“These materials will significantly impact the student learning experience,” said Central Square Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics, Jim Drancsak. “They will supplement video and instructor demonstrations with psychomotor skills practice.”

Drancsak said the AED trainer and the anti-choking trainers will familiarize students with proper hand placement, body position, depth of compression and set up in order to provide optimal survival opportunities without injuring their classroom peers.

“Aligned with the District’s mission statement, ‘to empower all students as citizens in a changing world,’ there is no greater need than to increase the population trained in cardiac survival skills,” said Drancsak.

The First Aid and CPR education will also enhance student career-readiness as they search for babysitting jobs and volunteer opportunities through their local volunteer fire departments.
