FULTON, NY – It happens far too often, a child is sexually abused; not by a stranger, but by someone the child knows and trusts.
In an effort to raise awareness of this problem and empower parents and caregivers to combat it, the Child Advocacy Center of Oswego County will host a luncheon workshop and discussion on this issue as part of the CAC’s 10th anniversary and National Child Abuse Prevention Month.
According to CAC director Karrie Damm, child abuse by someone the child knows is a growing epidemic.
“The idea of ‘stranger danger’ is out-dated and only occurs in 1% of cases in Oswego County. Our workshop, entitled, ‘Child Sexual Predators: The Familiar Stranger,’ will address the epidemic of child abuse perpetrated by people who are well known to the child,” said Damm.
The workshop, to be held April 28 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the CAC’s new location, 301 Beech St., will feature Director of the NYS Office of Victim Services, Tina Stanford and Acting Commissioner, NY Division of Criminal Justice Services, Sean Byrne as guest speakers, as well as an open discussion that will be hosted by members of the Oswego County Multi-Disciplinary Team.
“We are delighted to be able to offer this enlightening and informative workshop. It will be of interest to not only parents and caregivers but to those who may work at agencies that have programs addressing child abuse. Participants will have the opportunity to enjoy a nice lunch, watch a video on this topic, discuss the content with experts, and take a tour of the new home for the CAC,” said Damm.
The luncheon workshop is one of the many events that the CAC has planned to mark its 10th anniversary.
Established in 2001, the CAC is a non-profit charitable organization that provides a range of services to children who have been physically, sexually, or emotionally abused.
Working together with law enforcement investigators, child protective services, medical providers, therapeutic professionals, victim support professionals, and the district attorney’s office, the CAC offers a safe, child-friendly site that is necessary for a well-coordinated, effective approach to child abuse investigation and prosecution, and service provision to families and individuals affected by child abuse.
The cost to attend the “Child Sexual Predators, Familiar Stranger” luncheon workshop is $30 per person.
