FULTON, NY – Executive Director of the Child Advocacy Center of Oswego County, Karrie Damm announced that Melissa Baker has joined the CAC staff as a mental health counselor.
A native of Hannibal, Baker received her Masters Degree in mental health counseling from SUNY Oswego and is currently pursuing a certification in play therapy.
She previously served as a functional family therapist at the Cayuga Home for Children.
As a functional family therapist, Baker worked closely with families throughout Oswego County, looking at their relationships in a positive way.
Using a strength based approach, she was able to provide families with the necessary tools to help them function more effectively.
Through her position with the Cayuga Home for Children, Baker became familiar with the Child Advocacy Center and its services.
“The CAC is an excellent resource and they do a wonderful job with the families they serve. Since I like working with families and especially enjoy working with and helping children, the CAC is a perfect fit for me,” said Baker.
As a mental health counselor, Baker will work closely with the CAC’s multi-disciplinary team.
A collaborative effort designed to reduce the trauma to children and respective family members undergoing investigation of child sexual and physical abuse.
The team is comprised of a cross-section of law enforcement investigators, child protective services, medical providers, therapeutic professionals, victim support professionals and the district attorney’s office.
The team maintains a well-coordinated, effective approach to child abuse investigation and prosecution and service provision to families and individuals affected by child abuse.
Team members also work to enhance prosecution of perpetrators involved in child victimization and to help facilitate positive legal outcomes for child victims and their families.
Baker will be working at both the CAC’s main office at 301 Beech St. and the agency’s new satellite site 4822 Salina St., Pulaski, which will be opening in June.
“I’m excited about the opportunity to work in our new Pulaski location. There is a need for our services in the northern part of the county and this new site will provide easy access for the families that we serve in the area,” added Baker.
A non-profit charitable organization, the Child Advocacy Center of Oswego County provides a range of services to children who have been physically or sexually abused and provides a safe, child-friendly site for the investigation, prosecution and treatment of child abuse.
