FULTON – Life skills, teamwork and cookies have created a recipe for success for a handful of students in the work-study program at Fourth Street School in Fulton.
The program’s annual Christmas cookie baking event recently took place in the building’s kitchen where Jason Harris (Central Square School District) and Gabe Oliver (Phoenix Central School District) worked side-by-side to create dozens of delicious, homemade cherry cookies.
Roseanne Saunderson, teaching assistant with the Center for Instruction, Technology and Innovation, supervised the baking duo as she guided them through several skills: shopping on a budget, reading the recipe correctly, following directions, math/measurements, teamwork, staying on task and kitchen appliance safety, among several others.
The skills help the students increased their independence, she said.
Harris and Oliver both said they enjoyed baking and couldn’t wait to sample all of the leftover cookies, including pumpkin and peanut butter flavors.
Cookies were presented as gifts for their parents from the 10 participating work-study students in Kathy Agugliaro’s class.
Later in the school year, the students will put together a recipe book so they can re-create their meals and desserts with the help of family members at home.
