OSWEGO, NY – There has been a rash of day time burglaries in the Port City recently.
Among the latest house to be hit was a west side address.
Typically, the burglars strike during the day when residents are at work.
The last victims have reported jewelry missing, but other houses have been robbed of small items such as DVD players, laptop computers, and other small items of value.
The rash of burglaries can be blamed on, among other things, a combination of the economic downturn and the warm weather.
Oswego Police Sgt. Christopher Pooler has been interviewing neighbors for information.
As of now there are no suspects.
Currently Pooler said the plan of action was, “track down leads, talk to the neighbors and see if anyone has seen anything suspicious.â€
As far as advice for city residents, he said to, “Keep a look out for anyone suspicious or suspicious behavior. If someone unusual is in the area or someone is walking in between houses and looking through windows get a good description and call the police immediately.â€
Anyone seen walking through lawns and looking in windows is ‘casing’ a house. Casing is a term used by police to describe a burglar who is trying to see if there are valuable items or anyone inside a house. It’s also used to describe a burglar searching for easy entrance in a home.
Residents are reminded to lock their doors at all times, especially when they leave the house or go to bed.
One of the best ways to protect your neighborhood is to participate in a neighborhood watch program, according to Betty Gray, coordinator.
The next meeting of the Oswego Community Neighborhood Watch Program will be held tonight (Sept. 22) in the Oswego Public Library’s Community Room.
It will be held from 6 to 8 p.m.
