FULTON – Awards for top cadets and senior members and a talk on aviation heritage will highlight the Civil Air Patrol’s Central New York Group awards banquet on April 30 in Fulton.
The 3rd Annual Awards Banquet takes place at 6 p.m. that Saturday at Volney Fire Hall, 3002 State Rte 3, and brings together Central New York Group and its six squadrons (located in Fulton, Watertown, Syracuse, Rome and Utica/New Hartford).
Hosted this year by F.R. Sussey Composite Squadron of Fulton, Squadron Commander First Lt. Andy Roth said the banquet would feature a number of squadron-level awards, plus cadet of the year and senior member of the year awards presented by Group Commander Lt. Col. Kenneth Field.
State Assemblyman William A. Barclay will present state medals of merit to several military veterans active in the Civil Air Patrol, Roth noted.
The master of ceremonies will be Maj. Michael Kieloch, a former deputy commander for cadets.
The featured speaker will be Don Funke, a private pilot and president of Ithaca Aviation Heritage Foundation. He will discuss how the foundation is preserving the history of early aviation and the “Tommy Come Home ” project, where the foundation restored to flying condition a 1918 Thomas-Morse S4-B Scout, known as a “Tommy,” originally manufactured in Ithaca.
Central New York Group is headquartered at Hancock Field Air National Guard Base and is one of nine groups in New York Wing. The Civil Air Patrol is the aerospace education, cadet mentoring and search-and-rescue auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force.
