SUNY Oswego’s Sesquicentennial Reunion Celebration will feature a five-kilometer walk-run Saturday, June 11, to benefit the college’s Possibility Scholarship program and Oswego County Hospice.
Race officials are inviting all Central York runners and walkers, as well as SUNY Oswego graduates near and far, to enter the Sesquicentennial Race for Possibility and Hope, which will start at 8:30 a.m. in front of Culkin Hall, near the college’s main entrance off State Route 104.
“As we celebrate the college’s 150th anniversary, we wanted to do something that would draw members of the entire community and support two great community causes,” said Betsy Oberst, executive director of the Oswego Alumni Association. “We hope to see a lot of Oswego community members joining the many alumni who will be here for the Sesquicentennial Reunion Celebration.”
The Oswego Alumni Association, Friends of Oswego County Hospice and the Oswego YMCA have partnered to put on the 5K walk-run. Oberst said the goal is to make it an annual event.
SUNY Oswego’s year-old Possibility Scholarship program targets socioeconomically disadvantaged students who show promise in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines. Those selected receive tuition, room, board and fees for four years, as well as summer laboratory research with a faculty mentor. The students gain hands-on experience at the college’s Global Laboratory sites in Brazil, Congo, Taiwan and elsewhere.
Friends of Oswego County Hospice is a nonprofit organization that raises funds to help support patients and families, and promotes public awareness and professional education about hospice philosophy.
Race registration is $20 through May 20 — those early-bird entrants are guaranteed a commemorative performance-fabric T-shirt — and $25 thereafter at Oswego YMCA, 249 W. First St. or online at http://bit.ly/oswegoyrace. Race day registration will be available.
