OSWEGO –The Oswego County Health Department’s Environmental Division will hold the 26th annual Tap Water Taste Contest (formerly known as the best-tasting drinking water contest) during Health and Wellness night June 9, at the Oswego Farmers’ Market on West First Street.
Visitors will vote for their favorite samples of drinking water from municipal systems in Oswego County and health department staff will distribute educational materials to consumers about safe drinking water in their community.
“The goal of the Tap Water Taste Contest is to raise public awareness of the value and quality of public tap water through a fun, non-scientific, and publicly involved contest,” said Natalie Roy, principal public health sanitarian for the Oswego County Health Department. “Not only do community water systems compete to be acknowledged for their achievements, the contest also provides an opportunity for individuals to learn more about the processes necessary to deliver clean and safe water for public use and consumption.”
Last year, the town of Richland water supply won the local contest, and there was a second place tie between the village of Pulaski and the city of Oswego.
The village and town of Mexico water supply came in third, and the Sandy Creek-Lacona water supply came in fourth in 2015.
The winner of the local competition will advance to the regional competition and regional winners will compete statewide at New York State Fair in Syracuse.
Awards are presented to the regional and state winners at the state fair to celebrate and acknowledge their achievements.
The Tap Water Taste Contest has been held in New York State since 1986 and is organized statewide by the Water and Wastewater Education and Outreach Committee.
Committee members represent federal and state government agencies, professional associations, public and private organizations, community leaders, and training providers.
Its mission is to elevate, promote, and attract talented individuals into the water profession, and to raise awareness of the value of water and wastewater services with the public and elected officials in New York State and nationwide.
