District Level Battle of the Books at Sandy Creek

More than 40 students from Sandy Creek’s Elementary, Middle and High School competed for the honor to represent their district in the county-wide Battle of the Books competition on March 24 at G. Ray Bodley High School in Fulton.

The county-wide contest will begin at 6 p.m. in the high school auditorium.

Facing off in four age categories, grades 3 and 4, grade 5, grades 6-8 and grades 9-12, students answered 16 questions based on the books featured in this year’s Battle of the Books nationwide competition.

Teams were asked questions that began “In which book…” and they were asked to provide the book title and author that answered the question.

Students earned eight points for a correct title and author, or five points for a title only.

No points were awarded for correct author only.

The six teams of third and fourth graders faced off in a tough battle that at halftime saw a three-way tie for first place.

In the end, team Pancakes with members Lillian Kohlbach, Abby Chen and Abigail Burns was declared the winners of Level One.

Level Two, teams of fifth graders at the school, saw an even closer battle which ended in a tie that forced two tie-breaker questions to determine the winner.

In the end, Team Four with Lindsey Felio, Emma Halsey and Kendra Poyneer was victorious and won the right to advance to the county-wide competition and represent Sandy Creek at Level Two.

Level Three, grades 6-8, featured two teams in a head-to-head battle which again saw the teams tied at the half-way mark, but Team One with Catie-Ann Blodgett, Emily Ward and McKenzie Kwak emerged as the winner to advance.

Grade 9-12 also featured two teams in a close battle that saw Team One take the lead in the second half and remain in first place at the end of the 16 questions.

Team members Emily Smith, Madeline Yousey, and Olivia Bauer will represent Sandy Creek in the county battle on March 24 at G. Ray Bodley High School in Fulton.

Battle of the Books is a nationally recognized literacy program coordinated in Oswego County through the Center for Instruction, Technology & Innovation School Library System.

The program encourages students to read, enhances reading comprehension and promotes teamwork as well as academic excellence.
