Educational Talents Abound At Hastings-Mallory’s Open House

The Hastings-Mallory Elementary School open house and educational fair was a huge success.

Students in grades pre-kindergarten through five and their families flocked to the gymnasium for the Parent Teacher Organization-sponsored Science, Technology, Engineering and Math fair, where students showcased their talents and received resounding praise from peers, community members and teachers.

The non-judging showcase encouraged students to research and explore their favorite STEM topic to present during the event.

HME staff members walked through the gymnasium, where they offered encouragement and support of projects focused on sharks, volcano eruptions, types of rocks, scientific reactions and bridge building, among several other topics.

PTO President Jennifer Senf said the STEM fair aimed to foster excitement to learn something new. Students worked on projects with their families at home. While their submission could have correlated with academic units learned in school, that was not a requirement.

For their efforts, each participant was presented with a certificate, medal and positive feedback.

Also offered were information and activities from community organizations and raffle baskets to benefit the PTO.

Following the STEM fair, the spring open house invited parents to explore their children’s classrooms and learn their academic progress of the third quarter.
