Fairgrieve Focuses On Dental Health

FULTON – Dr. Frank Fruce recently visited Fairgrieve Elementary School to explain the importance of brushing and flossing teeth.

He said not only does what people eat and drink effect how people grow, food particles and beverages also can cause plaque and germs to collect on teeth if the teeth are not brushed.

That leads to cavities and inflamed or swollen gums.

One student raised his hand to tell classmates that if you don’t floss you can get cavities in between your teeth, and Fruce applauded the student’s knowledge.

Important oral health tips for students included: decrease sugar intake, eat healthy snacks, dilute juice, and brush teeth after breakfast and before bed.

Fairgrieve students have an opportunity to improve their oral health by receiving a cleaning, sealants, fluoride treatments and dental education from dental hygienist Jessica Overton.

Through the CHOMPERS program, she visits the school from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each Tuesday.

About 50 students are enrolled in the program, which has no out-of-pocket cost for parents.

First grader Alea Runge recently had her teeth cleaned, a fluoride treatment and was happy to receive a purple toothbrush to take home.

She and other participants may receive a cleaning every six months at school.

Overton sends students home with a note in case any follow-up exam or work may be necessary with their dentist.

Enrollment packets are available in the school nurse’s office.

CHOMPERS is a partnership between the Northern Oswego County Health Services, Inc. and the Health Foundation for Western and Central New York.

Appointments at Fairgrieve are scheduled through NOCHSI, but students will receive in-school reminders so they don’t miss cleanings or treatments.
