Through New York Road Runners, Fairgrieve Elementary third grade students are participating in the Mighty Milers Program, an initiative to promote exercise and prevent illness and obesity.

The students have their eyes set on completing a marathon, accumulating miles by running laps in their physical education class.
Nicole Garofalo, teacher and site coordinator for the Mighty Milers, tracks their progress through the NYRR online program.
Once warmer weather approaches, the students will run a mile per week around the outdoor track during recess period until they reach a total of 26.2 miles.
As a group, the goal is to run a total of 1,834 miles.
Currently, they have accrued about 500 miles together.

NYRR will provide each student with a T-shirt and a medal to commemorate their personal accomplishment, but that doesn’t seem to be the only incentive for these students.
“Being a Mighty Miler is not about winning or medals,” said John-Paul Murphy. “It’s about doing an activity with your friends and having fun.”
“Running has helped me get stronger and healthier,” said Reese Niver. “I like being a Mighty Miler because we work together so that we can run a marathon.”
