Sounds of Science filled the Fairley Elementary School gymnasium recently as electric violinist Caryn Lin delighted students with her high-energy show that combined music with science.
The performance, brought to the Hannibal Central School District through a partnership with the Center for Instruction, Technology and Innovation’s Arts-in-Education service, was met with rave reviews from the students.
Lin used stomp boxes, distortion pedals and other equipment to alter the sound generated from her electric violin, all while explaining the science behind the sounds.
“Sound is energy that moves from point to point using invisible waves,” Lin said. “We have nerves that act as messengers and they send messages to the brain that say, ‘hey, listen!’ That is how we hear sound.”
To demonstrate some of the different ways sound can be altered, students took center stage and became part of the act.
They erupted in cheers and laughter as different effects were used to change the pitch of their voice.
Seeing the delight on the students’ faces, Lin encouraged them to explore a career in science, music, or any area that brings them joy.
“Find what it is that you love to do in life and do it,” she said. “Follow your dreams.”
