With an eye on advancing to the Oswego County Battle of the Books competition, four teams from Fairley Elementary School put their knowledge to the test Tuesday as third- and fourth-graders squared off in the schoolwide event.
The four teams, Reading is a Hoot, Dragon Keepers, Purple Warriors and Reading Warriors, answered a barrage of questions pertaining to the 13 books they read as part of the competition.
Using their knowledge of plots, characters and story themes, the three-person Dragon Keepers team of Nathan Parkhurst, Zachary Ingersoll and Alex Misener rallied in the late stages of the battle to edge out their opponents.
They will advance to the countywide battle, which takes place at 6 p.m. March 20 at Mexico High School.
“I’m incredibly proud of them, they’ve worked incredibly hard and they earned it,” said kindergarten teaching assistant and Dragon Keepers team coach, Elizabeth Mooney.
All participants showed tremendous commitment to the competition, according to school librarian and event coordinator Marie Stroup. The students had to sign a contract and pass a test to participate.
“This is a commitment to themselves and their teammates,” Stroup said, noting that initial team meetings were held in October. “You’ve done a lot of reading and you’ve done a really great job.”
Other participants from Hannibal’s Fairley Elementary School included Kendall Cuyler, Emma Gombas, Lillian Hein, Theresa Przepiora, Kiley Emmons, Brianna Auchmoody, Dylan Ritchie, Ronald Collins and Jacob Remillard.
Coordinated through the Oswego County BOCES School Library System, the Battle of the Books competition moves from the school level and culminates in a battle between the school champions from districts throughout the county.
