Harley Somers shows the Rain Forest diorama and brochure she made while researching Brazil for the cultural showcase.
Students at Fairley Elementary School traveled to Brazil, China, Ireland, Australia and Spain as part of a global history and geography project that transformed classrooms into each country.

The unit covered a variety of topics and encouraged the students to explore other cultures through research, art, dance and writing.
The third graders read books and created brochures about the country they researched.
At home, they created dioramas that depicted the country, complete with similar terrain and landscape features.

“This is such a great unit because they learn about a variety of topics related to the country they researched,” said teacher Jodi Kraeger, whose students learned about Brazil. “They created rain sticks, they used Chatterpix (an app) to showcase their research about animals native to Brazil, they learned about the Portuguese language, sports and popular events.”
The research culminated in a cultural showcase where students invited family members into the school to see the projects and tour the classrooms.
