During the third annual Healthy Family Night at Fairley Elementary School on March 14, physical education teacher Lynn Halliwell helped unveil a new hooping exercise for students in kindergarten through fourth grade.

She made the announcement during a demonstration by founder and president of Soul Hooping, Heather Plyler.
Kindergartner Peyton Wirth picked up the rocking back and forth motion to twirl the hoop around her waist and abdomen, which Plyler said centers the body’s energy and relaxes the hooper.
A set of 22 weighted hoops will now be incorporated into physical education classes at Fairley.

Healthy Family Night also afforded children and their families’ opportunities to participate in a taekwondo demonstration, where they learned to break boards, visit with therapy dogs, jump rope, play hop scotch, try healthy snacks and learn about outdoor recreational activities.
Second grade students Charles and Jayden Thomas played a game at the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oswego County booth where they arranged drinks according to their sugar content.
Co-organizers Maggie Olon, Brittany Riesbeck and Geri Seward were thrilled attendance reached 536 people.
Students and their families won several door prizes, enjoyed popcorn and went home with family-friendly health and activity tips.
