MEXICO – Mexico Academy and Central School District’s bond with former students never breaks.

That was proven with the recent visit from former German exchange student Nele Brockmann of Schneverdingen, Germany, who returned to the Mexico community for a visit with her then-host family and now friends: the Hurlbutt family.

Brockmann and her friend, Sandra Baden, visited Mexico Middle School on a short break from a work tour on farms in Canada, the United States and Brazil throughout the next seven months.

Mona Goble, Mexico Middle School German teacher, said the Mexico-to-Germany connection began five years ago when Brockmann was paired with host sister Ashley Hurlbutt through the German American Partnership Program.

They formed a friendship and have remained in contact throughout the past five years, even after Hurlbutt graduated from Mexico High School.

Goble said it was younger sister and current German student Autumn Hurlbutt who invited Brockmann and Baden to come.

Because Brockmann and her friend visited some of Goble’s recent classes, current Mexico Middle School German language students were able to practice German with the native speakers.

The students also learned about Germany’s commitment to clean energy, as the Brockmann family owns a “biogas anlage” farm with 230 pigs.

On the farm, pig manure and corn are used to create fuel.
