Friends Of Oswego Public Library Support ‘Oswego Reads’

OSWEGO, NY – Excitement is building throughout Central New York over the appearance of a nationally known author.

Greg Mortenson will visit Oswego on Oct. 28 to culminate the first “Oswego Reads” Project.

Mortenson is the author of “Three Cups of Tea” and is the selection for “Oswego Reads.”

The Friends of the Oswego Public Library made a $500 donation to “Oswego Reads.” Committee members accept the check from Friends of the Oswego Public Library president Darcie Turgeon. This project includes residents of all ages reading one of the three versions of this book.

The “Friends of the Oswego Public Library’ are supporting this event and have made a generous financial contribution to the project.

Laura Ryder, of the “Oswego Reads” committee, said, “The donation will enable us to hold an ‘Oswego Reads’ kick off event on Aug. 3 from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. in  the Community Room in the Oswego Public Library. The remainder of the generous donation will be used on an as needed basis to host the community events in September and October.”

“Oswego Reads” is a project that will include a variety of events related to Mortenson’s #1 New York Times best seller book “Three Cups of Tea.”

The events will be conducted throughout the summer and early fall.

Mortenson will be in Oswego on Oct. 28.

Throughout the day there will be a variety of events involving the humanitarian-author, but the highlight will be in the evening as he will address thousands at the SUNY Oswego Campus Center.

Some of the upcoming events  planned by the “Oswego Reads” committee include tea tastings, children’s plays performed by the Oswego Children’s Theater, presentations about Pakistan by a SUNY Oswego professor, a kid’s fun run, and a military person who had experience on his tour of Afghanistan along with numerous other events that are still in the planning stages.

Mortenson is the co-founder and executive director of nonprofit Central Asia Institute.

Since the early 1990s he has dedicated his life to promote community-based education and literacy programs, especially for girls, in the remote mountain regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

He is also the founder of “Pennies for Peace” which will be another part of the “Oswego Reads” project.

Mortenson’s visit is sponsored by Pathfinder Bank and president Thomas Schneider have been extremely supportive in bringing the humanitarian-author to Oswego.
