OSWEGO, NY – The Oswego County Historical Society officially opened its doors for the season beginning in April.
Tours of the historic Richardson-Bates House Museum are offered Thursday through Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. or by appointment.
Admission is charged (free for members).
The museum features original period 19th century rooms and gallery displays featuring the evolution of the county.
Currently on display in the temporary gallery for the months of May and June is an exhibit entitled “The History of Fulton by the Friends of History.â€
This display has been organized by the Friends of History in Fulton and features illustrations, photographs and objects related to the community’s early development in the 19th century.
The display also shows Fulton’s era as a busy industrial city in the 20th century.
The temporary gallery traditionally alternates exhibits three times a year to showcase various objects and collections pertaining to the county’s history.
“For over a year, various historical societies and historians from throughout the county have been meeting at a monthly roundtable to help promote local history and to share ideas. An idea was formed to offer the temporary gallery space to various local societies to display some of their unique and interesting artifacts which showcase different areas of the county,†said Peg McKinstry, OCHS board president. “It has been great to share this space with others and learn more about the places that make Oswego County unique.â€
Last year, the society hosted exhibits that featured the town of Hannibal and the town of Oswego.
Other areas will be featured in the future.
