FULTON – In midst of an economic depression in Oswego County, government leaders like State Senator Patty Ritchie and organizations like the Department of Labor and Cayuga Community College have joined forces with local businesses to create and support ongoing job openings through accessibility and one stop fairs.
On November 30 from 4-7 p.m. at the Community Room at City Hall in Fulton, dozens of employers and organizations will join together during the holidays to offer those looking for work a one-stop shop to achieve employment.
Inside there will be tables of local employers hiring from all kinds of different positions from health to finance, administration to factory work and everything in between.
To compliment the theme, hiring agencies like Adecco and OCO will also be there.
There will be an application table outside for individuals to apply on spot along with computers and individuals to help with resume creating.
Some tips for hunting the right job or choosing the right career:
1.) Wake up, clean up, suit up and show up. Not everyone knows what they want to be when they grow up but we still need to work. So we take care of ourselves and expect the right job for us and act as if it’s happening. Decide what schedule, pay, criteria you want, what is negotiable and what is not. And go out and get it! Have good hygiene, resumes, a pen, notepad, business cards and talk to others and get their card.
2.) Avoid negativity like the plague. Negative people and organizations, just as much as negative self talk! Stay positive. Like attracts like. Think what you want as your goal and work until it happens. Most important believe without a doubt in your mind it will happen. Whether you think you’re going to fail or succeed – you are right.
3.) Don’t take no for an answer if yes is what you want. If someone isn’t hiring and you want to work for them keep asking. Make a habit of checking in. I’ve hired people who stayed in touch with me for years before we had a position open for them. One person in particular who after years of checking in we gave him a landscaping job at a recycling plant. Finally after years of doing that he’s quadrupled his salary and has his perfect position because of perseverance.
4.) Don’t give up. Ever. Success is one day at a time. An accumulation of good decisions one by one. It is not an act. Choose to succeed. One day at a time. And know you have supporters with many people like you succeed. The only people that try to hold others down are the ones not succeeding themselves. Stay away from them like the plague. Succeed without them.
