Gold Medal Performance By OHS Buccaneer Bulletin

OSWEGO, NY – “It’s gold again!,” exclaimed Oswego Buccaneer Bulletin co-advisor Bill Reeser as the scholastic publication has been recognized as one of the best in New York State.

The Buccaneer Bulletin was honored during the 72nd annual Empire State School Press Association Conference at Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Communication.

The tradition of an outstanding, award winning scholastic publication continues as the Buccaneer Bulletin staff was recognized with a gold medal for “All New York Gold Overall Newspaper.

Superintendent of Schools Bill Crist said, “Our Buc Bulletin continues to be a shining star for our school district. The staff members who have overseen the student paper have done so with great passion, commitment and perseverance. Students have similar attributes and continue to exercise their freedom of speech while providing objective work in the area of school media print. The recognition that comes to our Buc Bulletin is testament to the great connections that teacher, student can achieve and the great phenomenon of discovery and learning. “

Co-advisor Mike McCrobie noted, “We‘re very proud to be recognized by ESSPA as one of New York state’s best student newspapers. Very few people understand the amount of time and effort these students put into the paper, and it’s always great to be recognized by outside organizations as well as the appreciation we get from within the school community.”

Oswego also earned four other “gold” honors including the sports feature story by Jasmine Davis about football running back Damian Williams, to Fred Maxon for his portfolio of entertainment reviews and “front and back page redesigns for originality” as well as “design and typography for all issues.”

Three “silvers’ were also presented to the Oswego High School Buccaneer Bulletin.

Rachel Clark was recognized for her feature writing entitled “Incentive to Students” while columnist Kailyn Gray was cited for her portfolio of columns and Caitlin Sawyer and Steve LiVoti combined for front page recognition for their portfolio of 2008-09 front pages.

The December 2008 issue of the Buc Bulletin received a bronze award for the editorial page while Sawyer received a bronze for the feature story “Text Messages Lead to Trouble.”

Sawyer also received a bronze for the portrait photograph of swimmer Drake Becksted while Brian Richmond earned a bronze in the area of editorial cartooning for his portfolio of drawings.

Honorable mention awards were presented to Davis for her feature story on Becksted and Kaitlyn Scanlon’s feature “What Do Teen Boys Really Want?”

The Buc Bulletin staff also received an honorable mention for the editorial page in the May 2009 issue. missing or outdated ad config
