The Granby Elementary School community united for a charitable cause Friday night as the gymnasium and cafeteria were bustling with activities during an indoor carnival.
The event, which benefited Make-A-Wish of Central New York, featured bounce houses, carnival games, a photo booth and food.
Each person purchased tickets to participate in the different activities, with all money going toward making a sick child’s dream come true.
The fundraiser was born when sixth grader Hailey Bonoffski learned about the Make-A-Wish Foundation through her cousin.
“My cousin’s friend has cancer and we wanted to help people like her,” Bonoffski said, noting that the premise of the foundation is to grant wishes of children facing life-threatening illnesses. “It feels good to know we are helping sick kids’ dreams come true.”
Teacher Erica Bertrand led the sixth graders in the fundraising initiative, while parents, staff and community members also volunteered their time.
Their efforts netted more than $400 for Make-A-Wish, which will help cover some of the roughly $6,000 that it costs to grant a child’s wish.
