Granby Second Graders Celebrate Ag Literacy Weeks

GRANBY, NY – Granby Elementary School students recently celebrated Ag Literacy Weeks as they learned about food and fiber systems in their community.

Guest reader Erica Schreiner of the Oswego County Soil and Water Conservation District read the book “The Apple Orchard Riddle,” which educated second graders on types of farms, apples, parts of an apple and scientific practices that change the appearance of apples.

During the presentation, students said they’ve visited farms such as: animals, dairy, crops and beef. They learned that there are nine apple farms throughout Oswego County.

Students served as assistant scientists to Schreiner who led an experiment involving a piece of apple exposed to air versus a piece of apple soaked in lemon juice exposed to air.

After a short time, the lemon-juice soaked apple appeared bright and white inside, while the other apple piece turned a light brown.

When the acid in the lemon juice reacts with oxygen, it created a barrier which protected the apple.

Students were given cups and lemon juice to create their own classroom apple experiments at a later date.

Second grade teacher Tom Briggs said Ag Literacy Weeks pair perfectly with what second graders have learned about communities and insects as a part of various curricula.
