OSWEGO, NY – Harborfest has announced the winners of the 2011 Design Contest held this spring in conjunction with the Oswego City School District.
This year’s “Great Britain/England” festival theme was captured by students from various schools in the Oswego City School District.
“We are certainly blessed with some very talented students from the elementary level right up through the high school,” said Tom Van Schaack, Harborfest executive director. “Last year we chose just one design to feature, but with so many excellent pieces submitted this year, it was hard to narrow it down to just one, so we decided to incorporate as many of the designs as possible.”
Students from Melissa Martin’s art class at Oswego High School showed their graphic art skills.
Chrissy Abare (2011 Harborfest poster design), Justine Harrington (Harborfest brochure), Katherine Robinson (Harborfest program cover) and Rebecca Krauss (Harborfest trolley button) all submitted graphic artwork that will be featured on this year’s Harborfest printed materials.
Martin was very proud of her students, saying “I think it is great work and it is very professional at the highest level. There was plenty of research and sketching before the successful end result which I am very proud of.”
In addition to the OHS students work, artwork by students in Rebecca Woods’ Riley Elementary School class were incorporated into a unique promotion in which the artwork was used on placemats that were distributed to local restaurants.
Sophie Woods, Sierrah Haas, Kaitlyn Grant and Ana Cummins all had their artwork reproduced on placemats that are featured at Canale’s, The Press Box, The Ritz, GS Steamers Bar & Grill, Red Sun Fire Roasting Company and Port City Bakery.
Art teacher Linda Shannon and Oswego Middle School students researched many of their favorite authors from both England and Central New York to come up with designs and images that would illustrate the Harborfest theme through literature.
Students recreated characters from these books and placed them in the geographical backdrops of Oswego and London.
These works will be on display during the weekend of Harborfest situated on boards constructed in an open book-like fashion and placed on either side of the railroad tunnel bridge in East Park.
“The relationship with Harborfest is great,” said Superintendent Bill Crist. “It’s continuing to grow each year. I am glad that Harborfest includes our kids and families in part of this great community event.”
The students’ hard work will be recognized during the Harborfest opening ceremonies on July 28 on the NRG Lakeview Stage in Breitbeck Park.
Slated for July 28-31, the 2011 edition of Harborfest will feature plenty of food, fun and entertainment as venues on both Oswego’s east and west sides will be used to deliver the excitement. A wide variety of entertainment will be featured on stages throughout the city of Oswego including, the Jazz & Blues Stage in East Park, the Family Stage at the Novelis Family Park at East Park, the Veteran’s Stage on West River Walk and the NRG Lakeview Stage in Breitbeck Park.
