Hastings-Mallory Elementary Students Show Off Their Rhythm and Rhyme

Students at Hastings-Mallory Elementary recently introduced a very special visitor to their school.

Published poet Rachel Guido deVries worked with fourth and fifth grade students to help them learn how to tap into their poetic creativity.

The one-week residency focused on teaching students key elements of writing poetry, such as metaphors, similes, prose, rhythm and rhyme.

Students were then tasked with writing three of their own poems on any subjects of their choosing.

Their achievements were celebrated at a poetry reading and reception, where students had the opportunity to choose one of their poems to read aloud.

Parents were also invited to attend the event, enjoying cookies and punch with the classes after each reading session.

Guido deVries worked with students as part of the Central Square School District’s Poet-in-the-School-Residency.

This program aims at empowering students through creativity and hands-on learning with field professionals.
