OSWEGO, NY – The Heritage Foundation of Oswego County will host an informational program called Oswego County Stained Glass Windows I Have Known on May 15 at 10 a.m. at the Heritage Foundation headquarters, 143 W. Third St.
This program is the second in a series of which will focus on topics related to historic preservation.
The guest speaker will be Dr. Helen Jackson Zakin, Professor Emeritus of Art at SUNY Oswego, and an authority in the field of stained glass.
For a number of years, Dr. Zakin studied and photographed noteworthy stained glass windows of Oswego County and other parts of New York State and created a slide collection.
She will conduct a slide presentation featuring many of the significant historic stained glass windows that can be found in the county.
Some of the windows to be discussed have been destroyed either through fire or lost during the demolition of the buildings in which they were once housed.
“This is a wonderful collection that documents the historic stained glass windows that are an important part of the fabric of many of our significant landmarks in the county. We are pleased to announce that Dr. Zakin has graciously offered to donate her collection of slides to the Heritage Foundation for documentation and research purposes,†said Austin Wheelock, president of the organization. “We look forward to learning more about this collection as these windows are an important element of our historic environment.â€
This annual series of informational programs is designed to bring practical information to anyone interested in historic preservation and related projects.
It is especially useful for owners of Oswego County’s many historic and architecturally significant properties.
In addition to presentations by experts, the programs provide an opportunity to exchange insights and tips with other participants.
The Heritage Foundation was formed in 1962 with a mission protect, promote and preserve the historic, architectural and environmental resources of Oswego County.
