Literacy Volunteers of Oswego County, Inc. (LVOC) is seeking volunteer tutors who can offer two or more hours per week to assist adults learning reading, writing, English speaking and basic math. Tutors must have basic literacy skills. (ESL tutors do not need to speak a foreign language).

LVOC assists Oswego County adults in gaining the skills needed to progress to technical certification programs, college entrance, citizenship, and, for some, the basic skills needed for survival.

Tutors complete 18-hours of training on how to teach adults to improve their literacy skills. As a certified tutor, you will be matched with an individual whose schedule is compatible with your own. During these tutoring sessions you will be teaching basic literacy skills via tutoring materials that are specifically geared to interest and motivate your student or students.

LVOC offers continued training and support and as a Volunteer Tutor you will have an opportunity to interact and share ideas with other tutors. In just two hours a week you can make a difference in someone else’s life…and your own!

Volunteers must have patience, possess good literacy skills, and be sensitive to a variety of learning styles and ethnic backgrounds. Tutoring times and locations are flexible. Tutoring is available on a 1:1 basis or in a group setting. Training tools & materials are provided.

The next 18-hour workshop is scheduled for August 4, 6, 11, and 13 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in Fulton. The first three-hour session is an online orientation to be completed before the first class. Meetings will be held at Catholic Charities, 365 West First Street, Fulton. If there are enough interested volunteers, a workshop can also be scheduled for other times and other areas of the county.

Tutors are often the key that leads to the students’ success in classes, as family members, employees, and community members. Volunteers interested in assisting in this fun & rewarding program can call 342-8839 or visit www.lvoswego.org. Literacy Volunteers of Oswego County, Inc. is a member agency of United Way of Greater Oswego County.
