Literacy Volunteers Recognizes Learners, Tutors, and Volunteers

OSWEGO, NY – One hundred people gathered at Breitbeck Park in Oswego on Tuesday, July 13 for the Literacy Volunteers of Oswego County (LVOC) Annual Meeting and Awards Picnic.

This event gives LVOC the opportunity to recognize the efforts and to express its gratitude of its wonderful learners, tutors, and volunteers. “The accomplishments of the learners could not have been achieved without the dedication of the tutors,” said Rhonda Hutchins, the newly elected President of the LVOC Board. “We are extremely thankful for all the support we have received from the community toward improving the literacy skills of Oswego County residents.”

The 2010 award winners were: RayJan Koehler, Learner of the Year; Stephen Dodge, Tutor of the Year; Kathleen Mantaro, Volunteer of the Year; Joseph Root, Personal Progress; Chaz Barnes, Most Improved Learner; Caroline Aguzar and Shirley Slate, Outstanding Dedication.

RayJan Koehler and Winn Koehler also were recognized for receiving their GED.

Linda Barling and Nancy Knaggs received awards for tutoring for five years. Tutors receiving one year longevity awards were: Josh Brown, Becky Corvick, Barbara Cowles, Liz deReeder, Steve Dodge, Jean Dufore, Kathy Dunkin, LeeAnn Haggard, Susan Pope, Connie Ross, Peg Rowlee, Marilyn Scott, Chelsea Sherman, Janis Sussey and Doreen Tilton.

Tutors and learners also received certificates from Senator Darrel Aubertine and Assemblymen William Barclay and David Townsend.

LVOC learners Caroline Aguzar and Shirley Slate, and their tutor Susan Pope, gave such heartfelt testimonials that many people were brought to tears listening to their stories regarding what LVOC meant to them personally.

Orientations will be held at the Pathfinder Conference Room, 34 East Bridge Street, Oswego on Wednesday, July 28 from 5:30pm to 8:30pm and Wednesday, August 11 from 9:00am to Noon. “Improving literacy in our communities not only strengthens our learners’ self-determination, but also strengthens our community as a whole” declared Jane Murphy, LVOC Executive Director.

LVOC strives to provide opportunities for adults to achieve personal freedom by building basic reading, writing and technology skills in a confidential environment at no cost.
