Literacy Volunteers Scrabble Fest Spells Success

Close to 200 people came to the Oswego Elks Lodge on April 23rd to help support Literacy Volunteers of Oswego County at their 4th Annual Diane Falise Memorial Scrabble Fest. 32 teams of four came and competed against each other this year.

The annual event, which has become the major fundraiser for the organization, raised over $ 13,000 for Literacy Volunteers.

”The event is as much about raising awareness for the organization as it is about raising money,” said LVOC Executive Director Jane Murphy. “I would like to thank all of our sponsors, auction donors, and volunteers for their generous support.”

Major sponsors of the event were National Grid, Oswego County Federal Credit Union, Entergy and Alliance Bank. Other sponsors included Eastern Shore Associates, Constellation Energy, Pathfinder Bank, Fulton Savings Bank, Felix Schoeller North America, and the Oswego Elks Lodge. Media sponsors for this year’s Scrabble Fest were WSEN and oswegocountytoday.com.

The team that earned first place was “Q’Pla” consisting of Nelson Metz, Sherri Baker, Eric Cronk and Adele Ferry. Coming in second was Barbara and the Bees, who were followed by Brian’s Angels in third place. Vocabulary Constabulary won “Best Team Costume”.

“I support LVOC because if you can’t read, nothing else matters,” stated Sandy Todd-Wyman, a volunteer at Scrabble Fest. “Reading and math are fundamental basic life skills needed to be successful.”

LVOC provides basic literacy skills for adults, such as help in applying for and being successful in a job, paying bills, and helping your children succeed in school.  These programs not only improve a learner’s basic skills, but build their self-confidence and self-esteem as well.
