OSWEGO – The Professional Journalists and Communicators of Oswego County has announced the recipient of the organization’s Muriel Allerton Scholarship Award. Awarded annually to a graduating high school senior from the county who is planning to continue their education in a communications-related field.
The recipient is selected on their level of interest demonstrated in their chosen field of study and the aptitude and proficiency displayed during his or her high school career. Past award recipients have included students who chose careers in print or broadcast journalism, public relations, advertising or graphic design.
The recipient of the PJC’s 2014 Muriel Allerton Scholarship was Tara Stacy of Oswego High School.
She served as editor-in-chief of her school’s newspaper, the Buccaneer Bulletin, and has served as webmaster and layout editor of the publication. In addition to two bronze awards for her own stories, during her tenure as editor, the newspaper won the New York Press Association’s Best Overall High School Newspaper and was named this year’s Best Overall Paper by the Empire State School Press Association. She will attend the Park School of Communications at Ithaca College beginning this fall, majoring in Journalism and Communications.
Because of the quality of worthy candidates for this year’s scholarship the PJC unanimously decided to award a second scholarship to James Bailey of G. Ray Bodley High in Fulton.
A member of the National Honor Society and graduate of the Leadership Oswego County Youth program, he is a dedicated athlete, receiving varsity letters in football, wrestling and track.
He will attend St. John Fisher in the fall to pursue a career in sports broadcasting.
