Metro Center Seminar to Help Organizations Plan for Catastrophic Events

OSWEGO – SUNY Oswego’s Metro Center will offer a seminar Sept. 15 to help organizations prepare for catastrophic events, including natural disasters and terror.

The session in continuity of operations planning (COOP) will run 9 a.m. to noon at the Metro Center in the Atrium on Clinton Square in downtown Syracuse. Registration begins at 8:30.

Trainer Alfred Piombino will incorporate a discussion-based exercise to engage participants in hands-on learning designed to lay the foundation for writing an effective COOP plan.

Catastrophic-events planning, supported by FEMA’s National Response Framework, ensures an organization’s essential functions, programs, services, systems and personnel continue to function after a natural disaster or terrorist attack.

Among the subjects for the seminar:

* Understanding emergency situations that necessitate COOP planning.

* Identifying an organization’s essential functions and their supporting critical processes and services.

* Defining key personnel and roles, and how to coordinate with the national Incident Command System.

* Identifying and inventorying vital records, systems, equipment and supplies.

* Identifying alternate operations sites, communications methods and more.
