WAYLAND, NY — The New York State Association of Rural Health will host its ninth annual Rural Health Conference from Sept. 13-14 at the Villa Roma and Conference Center in Callicoon, NY.
This year’s conference theme is “Growing Healthy Communities,†and three educational tracks will be offered: Wellness, Community Development and Sustainability.
The conference has been approved for 10.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits tm through the UB School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences.
Pending applications for CEUs have been submitted to professional organizations.
Approximately 150 rural health professionals attend the annual conference, representing the breadth of NYSARH’s constituencies: clinicians, hospital administrators, rural health networks, researchers and educators, public health departments and agencies, and state health personnel.
NYSARH has a high standard for its educational offerings and a reputation for presenting quality educational programs.
The two-day event will feature several distinguished keynote speakers, including:
- Dr. Richard F. Daines, commissioner of Health, New York State Department of Health
- James Knickman, PhD, president and CEO of the NYS Health Foundation
- John Rugge, MD, and CEO of Hudson Headwaters Health Network
In addition to these speakers, the conference will feature 15 presentations from within the three educational tracks.
The presentations focus on current best practices for improving the health care and health status of communities; use of technology to support the community health improvements; use of HIT in hospitals, clinics and community settings; and addressing prevention in special populations.

Paul Moore, PhD, Office of Rural Health Policy, and Danny Fernandez, Government Affairs Manager, National Rural Health Association, will present at the conference’s general session on Sept. 13.
This session will provide an overview of the discussions taking place at the federal level in regard to health care reform and also provide insights on what attendees can do to be prepared for the changes to come.
The 2010 NYSARH annual awards dinner will be held on Sept. 13 to recognize individuals and organizations that have made outstanding contributions to NYSARH and rural New Yorkers.
The conference also features a Health Policy Forum, which will be held on Sept. 14, focusing on key policy developments related to healthcare reform on the state and federal level.
