Oswego County BOCES (OCB) Adult Education School of Practical Nursing recently held a Recognition, Pinning and Graduation Ceremony at the school. Three classes were recognized for their achievements in the program including Nurse Assistant, CNA Recognition and Spring Practical Nursing Pinning and Fall Practical Nurse graduation.
The Nurse Assistant class is a 125-hour program where students learn how to care for the elderly and chronically ill in nursing homes, rehabilitation clinics and hospitals as nurse assistants. The graduates are now eligible to take the New York State Nursing Home Nurse Aide Certification Examination. Twenty students successfully completed the Fall Practical Nursing program. The 1176-hour program is divided into three phases. Phase one includes the Nurse Assistant certification, while phases two and three include medical-surgical nursing, pediatrics, obstetrics, pharmacology, mental health, nutrition and phlebotomy. The following students successfully completed the program and are now eligible to take the New York State Licensure Examination: Jaclyn Behling, Linda Betterton, Amanda Braley, Whitney Copeland, Marsha Fuller, Crystal Gray, Cristie Handschuh, Patricia Hall, Jennifer Lane, Luz Marquez, Lisa Moore, Magdaline Nsiah, Denise Orr, Amy Proper, Kristy Pryor, Donnette Skellington, Heather Southwell, Eileen Turner, Barbara Westcott, and Kathleen Wood.
OCB Board of Education President John Shelmidine was the guest speaker, and he commended the students for their dedication and perseverance in choosing such an honorable career. He gave them three secrets to a successful and happy life; laugh and find humor every day, have a dream and strive to see the invisible, saying “Only those who can see the invisible can do the impossible,†and finally to acknowledge that there is a huge difference between growing up and growing older. He charged the students with being ambassadors of the educational organization and asked them to “carry forward not only the lessons you have learned in the classroom, but also the lessons you have learned in life through your experiences here at Oswego County BOCES.â€Â
Other recognitions and awards included a perfect attendance award to Donette Skellington and Valedictorian and Salutatorian recognitions. Valedictorian was awarded to Heather Southwell and Salutatorian to Magdaline Nsiah. Five students were also inducted into the National Technical Honor Society in a candlelight ceremony. The students were Amanda Braley, Whitney Copeland, Lisa Moore, Magdaline Nsiah and Heather Southwell.
