FULTON, NY – Oswego County Opportunities’ (OCO) Home Delivered Meal Service recently received national recognition as the program was awarded a grant from the Meals On Wheels Association of America, the oldest and largest national organization composed of and representing local, community-based Senior Nutrition Programs in all 50 U.S. states, as well as the U.S. Territories. The grant was the result of OCO’s Senior Services successful March for Meals campaign.
Held throughout March of this year, the campaign achieved a number of goals including; raising awareness of senior hunger in Oswego County, raising funds for the Home Delivered Meal Service, gaining the involvement of elected officials, and empowering community members to pledge to end senior hunger in America. According to Director of Nutrition Services, Amy Roland, the response to OCO’s March for Meals campaign was encouraging. “It was wonderful to see the concern and compassion that our community has for our seniors. Thanks in part to the support they provide, we are able to deliver thousands of meals to Oswego County seniors who depend on this service,” said Roland.
When Roland shared the results with the Meals on Wheels Association of America (MOWAA), her efforts, and those of everyone involved in OCO’s March for Meals campaign, did not go unnoticed. “We admire your accomplishments,” said Enid Borden of MOWAA. “We were impressed by the stories of MOWAA Members raising money, obtaining new supporters and volunteers and engaging their Mayors and public officials in the cause of senior hunger.”
Being recognized as one the nation’s finest Meals on Wheels programs was a humbling experience for Roland. “Everyone associated with our Home Delivered Meals program is honored to receive this recognition. What we do for our seniors is something we all truly enjoy. It’s rewarding to know that the Home Delivered Meals program is appreciated by others as much as it is by the seniors that we serve every day,” said Rowland.
A private, non-profit agency, OCO touches the lives of more than 28,000 people each year through more than 50 programs operating in more than 80 locations throughout Oswego County. The agency, which is a United Way of Greater Oswego County member, employs more than 650 people and has more than 1,000 highly valued volunteers.
