OCO Distributing Cancer Screening Kits

OSWEGO, NY – In an effort to raise awareness of the free cancer screening services available through Oswego County Opportunities’ Cancer Services Program, representatives from the program have been on site at Dynamic Sound & Security in Oswego throughout the month of September to distribute colorectal cancer screening kits and information to uninsured males 50 years of age and older.

“We want to encourage men not to wait and get screened today.  It is a fact that colorectal cancer is 90% curable when detected early, which makes completing a colorectal cancer screening kit of greater importance since early detection is the best prevention against colon cancer,” said Carolyn Handville, coordinator of OCO’s Cancer Services.

Throughout the month of September OCO’s Cancer Services Program Partnership of Oswego County has worked in collaboration with Dynamic Sound & Security of Oswego to offer an extra incentive to encourage men to stop in and receive a free colorectal cancer screening kit.

All uninsured males, 50 year of age and older who complete a colorectal cancer screening kit, now through Sept. 30 will receive a free basic vehicle detail, including a wash, dry and vacuum courtesy of Dynamic Sound & Security in Oswego.

“We are happy to be able to collaborate with Dynamic Sound & Security to offer this great incentive to encourage men not to wait and get screened today,” added Handville.

OCO is distributing InSure Fecal Immunochemical Test Kits for colorectal cancer.

The new, highly accurate, InSure FIT test for colorectal cancer detects hidden blood in the stool that could be associated with colorectal cancer.

Completing this screening kit is the first step in early detection of colorectal cancer.

“The test is totally private and easy to use. There is no need to stop into our office and no doctor visit. Just give us a call and we will mail the kit, complete with instructions and a self-addressed stamped envelope to return the results. It’s fast, easy, and done in the privacy of your own home,” explained Handville.

Free colorectal cancer screening kits are available from OCO’s Cancer Services Program Partnership at Dynamic Sound & Security, 143 George St. every Thursday from 4.-7 p.m. through Sept. 30.

“We invite community members to stop in and pick up one of these potentially life saving cancer screening kits and as an added incentive, we will reward those men that take charge of their health with a free vehicle detail.” added Handville.
